The Sonesta Essential Columbus receives mixed reviews, with some guests praising the reasonable cost, comfortable beds, and helpful staff. However, recurring concerns include inconsistent cleanliness, operational issues like elevator outages, and problems with deposits and refunds. Recent reviews highlight issues with bed bugs, poor breakfast quality, and unhelpful front desk staff.
I gave 2 stars because the staff was nice and the price was great but everything else was a hit and miss. This the kinda hotel you’ll go to if you’re a truck driver and need a quick place to stay for the night. So if you looking for a comfortable place to stay this ain’t that.
Perfect overnight experience. Clean and welcoming. Nice outdoor patio area. Parking accommodated our box truck and tow car. Nice size bathroom counter with walk-in shower. Comfortable beds. Comfortable desk chair. Would stay again.
I reserved two rooms with king beds. When we arrived at the hotel I was informed that the elevators were not working and hadn’t worked for three months. I then asked if they had any rooms on the first floor as we are in our 70’s and one person in our party is severely disabled. They responded they had only one room but it had two queen beds. Despite our advanced age I agreed to accept one room on the first floor and the second one on the second floor. The front desk clerk then ran my credit card for the second floor room as we waited for the first floor room to be cleaned. As we started to bring in our baggage and two small dogs we were informed that the dogs would be an additional $200 for our two night stay plus a $260 deposit. I told the clerk that was outrageous and to canceled our reservations as the hotel did not meet several of their listed amenities and what we made our reservations for. The clerk got her manager on duty who quickly informed me they wouldn’t refund the change they just made to my credit card and I needed to call Expedia for a refund. I called Expedia and was informed they couldn’t refund my money without the hotel general manager’s approval. I returned to the hotel and requested to speak to the general manager and I was told the general manager was not on site. When I asked for the general manager’s name and phone number they refused to provide it to me and told me there was nothing they could do and I needed to call Expedia which I did again and was told they just spoke to the general manager and was told there would be no refund. When I booked the rooms I did it on Hotels.com. Now I found out that hotels.com is Expedia. Besides the hotel having no working elevator, the lobby air conditioning wasn’t working properly so it was hot and humid. I will never book another hotel room with hotels.com/Expedia, nor will ever book a hotel room with this hotel chain.
The rooms were comfortable, roomy and clean. Staff was very helpful and kind. One thing is that in the four days we were there not once did housekeeping come in to clean or refresh our towels. I don't know if it just works different here and you have to ask?. Second, very loud noises at night, people yelling and running up and down the hallway way past midnight which would wake us up. Did not leave a tip because our room was never serviced.
My room was nice and clean. Front desk staff was nice.. Parking was decent... Hotel smells nice.. Elevator doesn't work... 4th floor has the only working ice machine in the building so be prepared to climb flights of stairs for anything you need to do. AND FYI THE BREAKFAST IS TERRIBLE NO HOT COFFEE. NO MEAT FOR BREAKFAST NO EGGS.. Basically dry biscuits and microwaved gravy.. Other thn that I guess this place is cool minus it's problem..
Convenient location, reasonable cost, comfortable beds. Basic toiletries provided if something is forgotten: body lotion, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Complimentary breakfast offered including protein options (scrambled eggs and sausage). There's 24-hour complimentary coffee. Snacks, including microwave popcorn and frozen ice cream treats, are available for purchase. The downside: DirecTV with no local stations we could find to get a feel for the place. Elevator was not working for entire stay. If this was not acceptable, at check-in we were given the opportunity to decline the reservation with no issues. We stayed. The room was clean at first glance but not on closer inspection. Visible trash under the chest of drawers, shower clearly had not been cleaned between guests, windowsill covered with dust (evident after placing a white garment there), and the in-room hair dryer was old, crusty and nonfunctioning.
My stay here was great! Friendly staff, great breakfast, quiet, and no crazy noise or people that I seen while there. I didn’t have any problems with my room except the sheets looked dirty or May have just been dingy. No biggie, i usually bring my own sheet set and blankets, pillows etc.. However, my issue with this hotel is the deposit…I had no problem with paying the $100 deposit with it being credited back to me after I checked out. 2 weeks after my check out, I still hadn’t got it back. So I started calling the hotel. I called several times over the next few weeks only to be told that they would look into it and call me back. Never once got a call back. Here it is, almost 3 months later and still getting the run around on my deposit.
The staff was unfriendly, the rooms were lack luster and were dingy, but the worst thing was the bed linens were absolutely disgusting. I always check the beds upon check-in and found makeup all over the pillow cases as well as yellow and orange stains on sheets and comforters. I went to the front desk and told the man at the desk about it. He started to give me attitude about it as other guests were walking through the door to check in and he was the only one there. I ended up telling him I would change them myself if he could get me more, I was told to follow him. He went to the laundry room and got new sheets and comforters. I in fact did have to change them myself and when I got them put on I saw they were just as bad. I guess they were just stained, but I find the old rough, stained, thread bare bed linens to be ridiculous when you're charging $150 or more a room. Then there was the shower that leaked a huge puddle of water all over the bathroom floor and the a/c never truly cooled the room off. The temp outside was in the 90's the day we got there and the a/c was off. It was miserable in there. I talked to another woman at the front desk when I was checking out about my experience. She was supposed to have the manager call me, but of course that never happened. I think we would have been more comfortable sleeping in our car. One more thing to be aware of if booking through a third party site, it also may be if booking through them I'm not sure, but you are charged a $100 damage deposit with your room at the time of checking in and told if you use a credit card that it will be immediately taken off once they check the room when housekeeping checked the room in a few hours and if you use a debit card it was 5-7 days. I used a credit card and it in fact had a pending charge on my credit card for 5 days.
The staff weren’t exactly happy to greet you, all minding their own business. I specifically chose this location for the pool, which I called weeks prior to make sure it was open, they informed me it was. I get there and it’s green, you can’t even see the bottom of the pool floor. Completely unacceptable. The breakfast was okay, and I have no idea what the actual hours were, one morning it was open till almost 10am, the next they closed it at 9:30am, so it was a little confusing. They have a coffee machine, but it’s mostly just sugar water, so if you like sweet drinks, then you’ll love it. I prefer to taste coffee, not sugar and sweeteners. The room wasn’t properly cleaned, I only noticed a pair of black socks under one of the nightstands that were in the dark, and only noticed them when I was doing my own checks to make sure I had everything. So that was pretty disgusting; the cleaning service obviously are not doing their jobs properly. Quality of the whole place was crap, and not worth the money I paid. Will not be back.
DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!! A friend and I booked two nights at this hotel last week. I returned home with over 200 bedbug bites! Yuck! My friend and I had a double queen room and apparently, my bed was infested with them. She had no bug bites. The bites appeared on me within a day of checking out. Dermatologist informs me that bedbug bites show up within 24 hours usually, which makes sense. All other bites have been ruled out: mosquito, spider, fleas, gnats. These are bedbug bites. Called the hotel and the woman who answered identified herself as the manager. I explained what had happened and gave her the room number. Told her which bed I had used. She said she would get back in touch with me after she talked with an exterminator. I have not heard anything. Called again and spoke with someone who informed me that a manager was not available, but he took a message. Then he called back to say he’d been able to talk with a manager who denied that the room had any bug issues (and that manager never called me to tell me that herself.). I’ll reach out to the parent company/headquarters of the chain who owns this hotel, but I want others to be aware! DO NOT STAY HERE! I have never had bedbugs bites before and this is miserable.
